The curriculum emphasis and recommended time allocation guide can be used flexibly to suit the local context of schools. For example:
  • Schools may elect to provide greater emphasis on specific priority areas than are recommended in the time allocation guide and implements inter-disciplinary approaches that maximise the learning time within other areas
    • ​​​schools should maintain an awareness of the implications when compressing learning areas and/or subjects into a single term, semester or year and the effective coverage and assessment of the achievement standards
    • schools may be required to allocate time flexibility through scheduling of specialist teachers that are used to provide teacher non-contact time​

Subjects studied for at least one semester across years 9-10 are History and HPE. Respectful relationships curriculum, including drug and alcohol and consent education must be covered, either in HPE, Pastoral and/or school programs. ​ ​

Schools should provide choice for students in all eight learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. Schools make choices about how they will offer electives, but if a subject is offered it should enable the prescribed hours, so students are equipped for success in the senior secondary subjects.
